Real Testimonies: Ralph Ogata, "It Could Have Been Me"

In the early ‘70’s, I was a young Air Force serviceman stationed in Turkey. As an unbeliever, and away from home for the first time, I wasn’t much different from other U.S. servicemen there. Some of us were interested in traveling around this unique country whenever we had a few days off. On one occasion, four of us were to drive down to the coast. At the last minute, I pulled out, and they went on without me. On their way back a couple of days later, they got into a car accident, and one of my friends was killed. I was stunned. This was the first time that someone my own age whom I personally knew had died suddenly. I mourned his lost, but I also started realizing my own vulnerability, especially since I could have died myself. What would have happened to me if I had died? I became more open to what God wanted to tell me. I began attending a small Baptist mission outside our base. There, I was introduced to a close-knit community of believers. Little by little, my many questions were answered, and the salvation plan was made plain to me. The Holy Spirit started convicting me of my sin, and I knew I needed to be saved. After unwavering conviction of my sins over several weeks, I finally gave up and prayed to accept Jesus into my life. It was the most important decision of my life, and I’m thankful I made the right choice.
